Where can you sleep?
A Coruña has managed to sneak into the top tourist destinations for the past years. Its beaches near the capital, from where the basis of its gastronomy is fished out, are the image that thousands of tourists try to capture every year. If you're thinking about planning a trip here, we recommend you start doing so ahead of time since this is one of the destinations in greatest demand and availability might be a bit limited here.
Once you have made sure when exactly you will be travelling, let's move on to the location itself. The most expensive area of this province is Santiago de Compostela, due to the great number of tourists who come every year to the Camino de Santiago, or to Finisterre, although you will see there are many hostels and inns around here. On the other hand, if if you're travelling on a budget, we recommend you go for the inland towns and villages, which have no reason to be jealous of those on the coast.
What to do in the area?
With the great views of the sea as your background, going to the Paseo Marítimo for a walk can be a good idea to relax a bit. If you prefer to explore the main attractions, the Torre of Hércules is an impressive tower by the sea that is one of the most popular ones in this province. The history of its origin and tis undeniable beauty will leave you speechless.
There are also many important museums here, such as the archaeological museum inside Castillo de San Antón, or the Domus. For the more romantic visitors, we suggest you wait for the sunset in the Jardines de San Carlos, or walking through Ciudad Vieja. Of course, if you're in Santiago de Compostela you mustn't forget to visit the Plaza del Obradoiro.
What typical foods are recommended?
One can't talk about A Coruña without mentioning the local seafood, the essence of Galicia's gastronomy, and its recipes that make of its northern area one of the most renowned ones of Spain, internationally. Its harbour welcomes sailors and visitors alike, with its impressive views.
But if you would prefer to avoid any fish in your meals this is also the right place for you.
You will be able to try here the very famous 'empanadas' in any of their variants of filling, and the delicious cheese that should always be accompanied with a glass of the local wine.
Where are the festivities?
A Coruña is one of best the party-loving regions of Spain.
Here you will always find something to celebrate. Starting with February, when carnivals start, you will have a calendar filled non-stop with festivities, until October 7, the local festivity honouring the city's patroness: Nuestra Señora del Rosario.
And let's not forget about the bonfire of San Juan, on the 23rd of June, painting a beautiful picture of the fire-lit beaches, or celebrating María Pita, a heroine of great importance here in Galicia, in August, as well as many other events and fairs and festivals celebrated during this month.
