Calpe is a town loacted in the province of Alicante that forms part of the region Marina Alta where you’ll be able to have fun amongst a large wave of tourists with it being one of the most popular travel destinations.
This costal municipality has a spectacular location alongside a range of architecture full of patrimony and an environment where the nature and the views of the Mediterranean Sea dominate its whole landscape making it a real-life magnet.
It’s also a place where lots of ancient settlements have been found from the bronze age, making it seep with rich history. In terms of the population, it is home to 24,000 habitants that are called “calpinos”. However, the population is always multiplying thanks to its location and precious beaches. During summer in Calpe the streets are full of life!
So, what is there to see? Well going through its streets, without ignoring the lovely views of the sea, we are going to show you some things to see that you don’t want to miss out on, especially if you don’t have a lot of time.
We’ll start with Peñon de Ifach (Penyal d’Ifac) which is one of the most renowned natural parks in Spain and the main key feature of this region. It is made up of a 330 metre tall mountain in the middle of the sea that unites the land through an isthmus. There’s a route you can follow that will take you up to the tip of the mountain where you’ll be greeted with an impressive panoramic view of the sea and the town, and you’ll even get to see Pobla d’Ifach which is an old settlement from the Middle Ages.
If you’re wondering what to do with a day in Calpe, this has to be on be on your list, even if you don’t make it all the way to the top, we recommend at least going to enjoy the sunset or sunrise with a view of the mountain.
The Paseo Marítimo is another route you can’t miss. If you complete the whole track it’ll take about half an hour while you admire the beauty of the coast and get to know the port.
It’s precisely in the fishing port where you’ll be able to enjoy the fish auction tradition that takes place every morning from Monday to Friday. You also must visit the Salinas de Calpe which is a natural habitat for flamencos where you can live the experience of bathing in some Roman ruins, one of them being Los Baños de la Reina.
What is there to see in the town? It’s filled with stunning architecture you simply cannot miss out on like Castillo Fortaleza which was a Muslim castle where you can still see its standing ruins. The Torreón de la pieza and the Torre del Castellet are two of the unmissable ones.
In terms of religious patrimony, we need to highlight the Iglesia de Nuesta Señora de las Nieves which is a church that can be found right in the centre next to the Iglesia Antigua, a small chapel adorned with traditional gothic mudejar art in the Valencian community. However, there exists two hermitages located nearby: Salvador del Calpe and San Juan de la Cometa in the outskirts.
The map of Calpe leaves us with a cost full of more than a dozen coves and beaches. You’ll be able to spend the day beside the sea with an array of different types of services. The Levante beach (playa de Levante) is the best one to go to as a family, it’s easily accessible and is blue flag approved.
