The municipality of Llíber can be found in the province of Alicante where you’ll be able to admire a gorgeous inland town with a spectacular landscape in the region of Marina Alta.
Evoking landscapes, spectacular patrimonies and a never-ending number of points of interest are just the tip of the iceberg of what you’ll find in this enchanting place which is an entrance door to the Valley of Pop that helps add to its exceptional scenery.
In this small and unknown town with less than 960 habitants, its economy relies heavily on grapes, which are used to make high quality muscatel wine, as well as raisons and almonds which are used to make traditional cookies called carquinyolis. So, if you decide to come a visit you cannot forget to try its delicious and traditional gastronomy.
So, what is there to see? The architecture of this municipality holds some points of interest that are worth going to see and where you’ll get to know part of its history.
In terms of the ones that stand out most, we must highlight the conjunto tradicional de los Riuraus which are a series of constructions very typical to the region which in the past served to protect the raisons from the low temperatures during the coldest season. This town is found in two areas: at the foot of a mountain and within the area of Els Cairons.
Furthermore, you’ll be able to get to know the two rural communities nearby the city, Marnes and El Cau, what the Spanish call “alquerías”. These two were small settlements from the Valley of Pop where you can find traditional cottages that belonged to working people dotted about.
By walking about its streets, you’ll be able to enjoy a lovely setting where the houses, adorned with flowers, will make your walk very enjoyable. On the path, you’ll find one of the most characteristic points of interest in the municipality: the ascend up to Calvario.
It’s a route that guides you through some religious points of interest and its flowers will make for a very enjoyable walk where at the end you’ll be faced with a viewpoint where you can enjoy the spectacular views of the Pla de Llíber which is the flattest part of the territory.
On the other hand, in the centre of the town, there is a church called San Cosme and San Damián, it is known as the temple of excellence and is the biggest representation of religious architecture you’ll find in the town.
Lastly, we recommend getting to know the city council, which is right in the centre as well as the Balsa de la Fuente de Aixa, which is a natural space between mountains that creates a natural habitat for a variety of different species of vegetables, one of the more surprising ones being the plant of Erica Arborea, an endemic spice from the region.
When do their festivities take place? The religious festivals are celebrated in August and are carried out in honour of San Roque, who is the patron saint of the town. Furthermore, it will be the perfect opportunity for you to enjoy the gastronomy we spoke about before. But where should you eat? In the centre of Llíber you’ll find various bars and restaurants where you can enjoy some typical dishes of the region.
If you want to enjoy a few days in the area, there’s nothing like holiday cottage to ren in Llíber that will allow you to disconnect, or if you’re travelling in summer, a holiday home with a pool you can take a dip in.
