As you know, Asturias is a real paradise in itself, made up of small jewels turned into villages, as is the case of Cangas del Narcea, a council that is well worth being visited to enjoy the wide range of rural tourism on offer here.
It is one of the largest Asturian councils in the Principality of Asturias region, located in the southwest and bathed by the waters of the Narcea river, which leaves behind chiselled-like landscapes that will leave you speechless.
Cangas del Narcea is a lively place at any time of the day, where strolling through its streets means to discover part of its history materialised in monuments and historic buildings.
Would you like to know what you shouldn’t miss during your visit to Cangas del Narcea? We are going to give you a detailed description of both cultural and natural spots.
As for the cultural ones, we begin by highlighting the large number of palaces in this town, and among the most important we would highlight the Palace of Omaña, which is located in the heart of the council, in the Plaza Mayor square. But it is not the only one you will find here, since there are others such as the Palace of Toreno, the Palace of the Llano family or the Palace of Peñalba. As you can see, there is no shortage of places here to make you feel like a real king or queen.
On the more religious side, the Chapel of Carmen, located in Entrambasaguas, one of the oldest neighbourhoods in Cangas del Narcea, stands out too. On the sae note, the Collegiate Church of Santa María Magdalena, which is a Historic-Artistic Monument is also a fantastic representation of Baroque art in the council that you must visit.
You cannot miss another of its Historic-Artistic Monuments, the Monastery of Corias, which is nowadays awarded the Spanish Parador Nacional Inn status. It is known as Asturias’ own Escorial Palace and, although its construction began in the 11th century, it was not until the 17th century that it took on the structure we can admire nowadays.
The Monument to the Miner reminds the inhabitants and tourists of this region’s mining past, which was for many years one of its main economic engines. And, of course, its bridges are not to be missed either since there are many here.
If you travel to Cangas del Narcea, you will also be able to sample the essence of the area's in its delicious and typical recipes. They tend to be very filling dishes in which vegetables, beans and, of course, the famous compango (pork sausage) are always present.
Enjoy a potaje stew, some fabes pintas beans with chorizo, black pudding and bacon, and leave room for dessert, because among its most famous sweets are the frixuelos. Did you know that this is also a wine-producing area? Seize the opportunity and drink a glass of Cangas del Narcea wine.
Finally, we would like to highlight the liveliest part of the town, which can be specially enjoyed at local festivities such as the Fiesta del Carmen and Fiesta de La Magdalena, both taking place during the second half of July. These are celebrations of Regional Tourist Interest, as is also one of its most traditional festivals: the harvesting period known as “La Vendimia”.
