We return to the Asturian community's lands to offer you a new location ideal for a rural holiday trip. We show Mestas de Con, a little community in the Cangas de Onís council and the province of Oriente de Asturias.
This municipality stands out for its simplicity and houses only 200 residents who are proud of the historical legacy bestowed upon them. The church of San Pedro de Con, in Romanesque style and with a single arch is the town's most noteworthy architectural example. Furthermore, you will also witness various historic granaries alongside the fields.
The village itself is modest, but the surrounding area is full of beautiful and intriguing locations to visit. It is situated at the foot of the Picos de Europa National Park, a mountain range that encompasses some parts of Asturias, Cantabria, and León provinces. The famous chapel of the Virgin of Covadonga, patron saint of Asturias, and the stunning lakes are located within the park.
The Angón Valley is another nearby location with plenty of greenery. It is regarded as the Picos de Europa's 'green heart'. You can always visit Cangas de Onís or one of the adjacent beaches, such as Ribadesella if you wish to explore a more urban region.
The Cares route is recommended for individuals who prioritise fitness even on vacation. It is a straight trail of roughly 12 kilometres in the Picos de Europa. As the terrain can be challenging at times, it is recommended that you have some hiking experience and proper trekking equipment.
When it is time to relax, one of the best things to do in this town is to rent one of the traditional country houses. We recommend this because this gives you the whole rustic experience. If this is not what you prefer, you will find a variety of hostels and guesthouses to choose from.
Of course, we assume you won't leave without sampling traditional Asturian food, such as a delicious fabada to warm you up or a cachopo to share with friends or family.
Mestas de Con fiestas are commonly held in Cangas de Onís, as they share the majority of them. Those of Nuestra Señora de Covadonga, on September 8, and the colourful carnivals that take over the streets in February are the most unforgettable.
Allow yourself the opportunity to relax and unwind in the Asturian countryside, in the picturesque and charming village of Mestas de Con.
