Can you imagine enjoying every day the views of extensive green meadows and a river crossing them all? Well, surely that picture is the same as that of the town of Hoyos del Espino, located in the province of Ávila, in the Tormes region and in the Sierra de Gredos Regional Park, a perfect destination for rural tourism.
Hoyos del Espino has managed to preserve its natural treasures to perfection, being an enclave where pine forests, meadows and land are all bathed by the river Tormes take centre stage, forming the ideal place for a holiday in which to disconnect and relax.
There are many things to discover in this town on its most natural side, but if you go into the town centre you will discover some of its monuments little by little.
First of all, we suggest a stop at the Sanctuary of Nuestra Señora del Espino, dating from the 15th century, with a Romanesque façade and interiors that are representative of the region’s Baroque and Gothic heritage.
A second stop, very close to the previous point, could be at the Gothic-style Crucero, which has a cross in almost perfect condition, like few others in the Sierra de Gredos. The School Clock is another of the emblems of Hoyos del Espino, built in the 1920s, it still tells the time punctually to its neighbours.
Finally, and perhaps the most representative image of this town and, in general, of the Sierra de Gredos, is the Monument to the Hispanic goat, carved in bronze and placed on a large rock.
Many things stand out in Hoyos del Espino, but perhaps the fountains are the most constant elements if you walk through this town. Up to 70 fountains have been counted, including the Fuente del Venero or the Fuente del Pilar, located in the square of its same name in the centre of the village. There are also some old and curious ones, such as the Fuente de la Chorra, which in this case is the most secluded in the village and at the same time, peculiar, as the basin is a sarcophagus from the Visigothic period. It's amazing, isn't it?
Almost putting an end to your tourist adventure in Hoyos del Espino, we recommend you visit some more secluded places such as Puente del Duque and Las Chorreras, two incredible natural spaces less than two kilometres away and next to the river Tormes that include natural pools where you can cool off from the heat while enjoying the views.
With so many routes you'll surely get hungry, so there's nothing better than to recharge your batteries at the table with some traditional dishes such as patatas revolconas with torreznos (pork rashers), beans from El Barco, or a t-bone, all of them classics in the province of Ávila.
Among its most important celebrations we highlight the festival of Musicians in Nature, with great personalities from the world of art, or the Half Marathon for Nature, a sporting event with more and more participants, will you be one of them?
Now that you know (almost) everything that Hoyos del Espino has to offer, all you have to do is decide where you want to stay, and we can tell you that there will be a wide range of accommodation on offer, including hotels and hostels, as well as more than fifty rural houses.
