Aranda de Duero is a municipality located within the community of Castilla and León and belongs to the province of Burgos, where you’ll be able to enjoy history and landscapes that reign within the region.
The municipality is composed of 33,000 habitants that are called ardinos and are spread about 9 towns and have the pleasure of enjoying a patrimony full of history. This number increases in the summer season when the weather offers a pleasant temperature, although its winters are quite cold, and frost is not uncommon.
What is there to see? With its name you would have guessed this is the ideal place to explore its streets where you’ll find lots of different points of interest that you don’t want to miss out on.
Out of all its civil architecture the thing that stands out is the Berdugo Palace, right in the heart of the city, where you’ll also be able to take a walk through the square and admire the city council building.
It also counts on several important bridges Including the Conchuela from the Middle Ages and the Tenerías of roman origin. If you want to enjoy a peaceful walk, there’s no better place than the park of San Antón where you’ll find a religious monument from the 18th century.
In terms of the religious patrimony there are several churches dotted about. The most important one is the church of Santa María la Real which dates back to the 15th and 16th centuries and that is a monument that has been declared a national cultural interest.
The church of San Juan and San Nicolás de Bari in the centre of Sinovas and the church of San Juan de la Vera Cruz are another few temples that are worth visiting. You can’t forget about the two shrines in Virgen de las Viñas and San Pedro Regalado in La Aguilera.
Aranda de Duero isn’t just a pretty place, it offers one of the best experiences, specifically because of its history which is closely tied to the world of wine. There are over 300 traditional wineries, and some offer the option to enjoy a wine-tasting and tour.
One of the main reasons to visit is for the gastronomy, aside from being able to try its wines, you’ll be able to try lechazo which is their traditional dish made from lamb in any of the restaurants.
Another reason to come is for the celebrations that attract a lot of people with events like Sonorama, one of the most famous independent music festivals. But when are the religious festivals? They’re celebrated in the month of September in honour of Virgen de las Viñas.
Whether you want to experience one of those events or you just want the chance to get to know the municipality, any time of year would be a good time to come and there are bus lines that will get you right here. However, we would recommend coming by car if you can, that way you can go visit neighbouring towns and the surroundings on your own without having to rely on public transport.
