Santo Domingo de Silos is located between the rivers Arlanza and Mataviejas. It is a community in Burgos that is a unique rural tourism attraction, especially for students of Spanish history. It is located in the Demanda-Pinares region.
The historic Monastery of Silos, a reference point in the history of the Cid Campeador, is named after the town. Although this is its most well-known landmark, it also has the San Pedro Church and the Virgen del Camino Hermitage. It also preserves medieval relics, such as the San Juan Arch, formerly part of an ancient wall.
It also includes a couple of museums, including one inside the San Francisco convent. The history of monasticism and the presence of religious orders in the municipality are explained in this museum. Due to its exhibition of musical instruments from all around the world, the other museum is known as "The Sounds of the Earth."
What is in the surrounding area? The scenery of Sad Hill Cemetery contains some of the most iconic scenes from the film ‘The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly’. In addition to this path, the Betterville concentration camp and the convent of San Pedro de Arlanza may be found.
There are also walks in the Yecla gorge, which include narrow footbridges and steep cliffs that overlook the Mataviejas River. Going down the Cervera crag or seeing the Mozarabic chapel of Santa Cecilia in the village's surroundings, on the other hand, is an excellent option.
Hiking is one of the most popular activities. The Lagunas Glaciares de Neila Nature Reserve has numerous marked trails, or you can follow a stretch of the Camino del Cid, which connects Burgos and Valencia.
With fewer than 300 residents, the town is small, yet you are sure to discover the perfect rural house to stay in during your trip. They all have a homey vibe to them, making them excellent for a stay.
And what about food? You don't have to worry, because any place you find will serve you typical Burgos delicacies: black pudding, wine, suckling lamb... In Santo Domingo de Silos, the 'Grandfather's dessert' is particularly outstanding, consisting of Burgos cheese, Silos walnuts and honey.
Its most important celebration is the Fiesta de los Jefes, which takes place on the last weekend in January. It commemorates the victory of El Cid against the Moors and the Devotion to the Sweet Name of Jesus.
