Thinking of doing rural tourism for a few days? Want to escape to a town in the province of Cáceres and do not know which. Well, right now we are going to solve your doubts. The best destination for your holidays is, without doubt, the town of Navaconcejo.
This is a town in Extremadura where you will be able to take a break from everything, and where you will find the best views of the Jerte Valley in which it is located. A panoramic view that we are sure you will remember.
If you are attracted by nature, in this municipality you will be able to enjoy great landscapes that are one of the main sources of its economy. Without doubt, Valle del Jerte is one of this region’s attractions, as are, of course, its delicious cherries. Visiting the cherry fields during the flowering period is one of the favourite options for tourists from all over the world.
We also recommend one of the most beautiful hiking routes in the valley, the Las Nogaleras route, also known as the Waterfall Route, a 6-kilometre experience that will take you from the green of its vegetation to the blue of the waterfalls you'll find on your journey, even allowing you to bathe in summer.
Navaconcejo is a peaceful town that will make you disconnect from your everyday life, and where the tourist offer is based mainly on its natural heritage, although it is certainly not all that it has to offer, since in the town centre, there are architectural references that you have to see.
A walk through its streets will make you realize the importance of the tradition perfectly preserved by its inhabitants. Its civil and religious architecture makes visiting the town centre a perfect plan to enjoy as a couples, family or alone.
Navaconcejo is structured around three main axes: the Paseos del río Jerte and the Paseos de Extremadura, and the Cañada Real. A walk along the Calle Real is to discover the heart of the town and enjoy the different traditional buildings, which is the case of the Crucero.
And as for the religious architecture, in Navaconcejo there are quite a few examples of it. One of the landmarks is the church in honour of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción, which dates from the 16th century, as well as the two hermitages, San Jorge and Cristo del Valle, from the 17th and 18th centuries respectively.
Another of the representative buildings in Navaconcejo is the Sayales factory, which is a traditional thick wool fabric that was of great importance to its economy for centuries. This building has been declared of Tourist Interest and in it, the Renaissance style can be perfectly appreciated.
But you do not really know the essence of a town until you experience its traditional festivities, which is why in January we suggest that you travel here to enjoy the Fiesta del Traballo, which is closely related to the production of the traditional sayales.
Finally, if you have completed each of these routes, you will deserve a prize! And in Navaconcejo that means enjoying a typical tasting of its most traditional dishes.
Migas, caldereta, patatas aconejas and picadillo as well as the products derived from the pig slaughter are, without a doubt, a good representation of this cuisine that would be incomplete without also trying the famous cherry brandy, or its delicious jams.
