In the province of Cáceres we find the municipality of Robledillo de Gata, where you will find one of the best examples of popular Spanish architecture as well as spectacular scenery.
It is one of 20 municipalities which make up the Sierra de Gata mountain range. At just over 100 kilometres from the city of Cáceres, it's an ideal destination for disconnecting and enjoying rural tourism.
This is where the River Arrago rises. It will go on to carve striking shapes into the landscape, but not without irrigating the soil and creating a productive area for agriculture. The buildings and structures associated with this traditional use of land are still visible today.
What to see in and around Robledillo de Gata? The best sights of this municipality in Cáceres are to be found in its town centre, declared a Site of Cultural Interest. There are a number of viewpoints that give you a panoramic view of the typical architecture of the town.
The main building materials are slate, adobe and wood, while the houses are packed together creating narrow alleys. Pine cone motifs and balconies adorn the façades, contributing to the unique charm of the town’s streets.
There are also some notable things to see in the area, such as the church of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción, which dates back to the 16th century and is the main place of worship in this town.
In addition, there are three hermitages set in large natural spaces that are fascinating to discover.
If you want to discover one of the treasures of the town, visit the Molino del Medio. It's an old olive oil press that has been perfectly preserved and is open to the public, with a museum and a tasting room where you can enjoy the famous liquid gold.
As for the fiestas of Robledillo de Gata, there are several events marked in the calendar, such as those held in honour of San Blas, in February; those of Nuestra Señora de La Asunción, which are the most traditional and are held in August; and those of San Miguel de la Vendimia which are held in September. And we can't forget its typical Easter Week, which is well worth experiencing.
In any of the establishments in the centre of the village you will be able to sample traditional dishes, the icing on the cake of a terrific holiday.
How to get there? The easiest and most comfortable way to get to Robledillo is by car, as it is one of the most isolated villages in the Sierra de Gata. The road is good, but it is narrow and somewhat steep.
Once you arrive, there is a wide range of accommodation options, among them several holiday cottages for rent and apartments in small flats.
