San Martín de Trevejo is in the Sierra de Gata in the province of Cáceres. It's one of the most beautiful villages in Extremadura and, indeed, the whole of Spain.
This municipality has as much beauty as it has character, with plenty of natural spaces around it, a charming town centre and a deep-rooted culture that you will be able to feel from the moment you arrive.
What to see in San Martín de Trevejo? Strolling through the town centre is like stepping into history. In fact, it's a history that is still alive today.
As soon as you set foot on its sloping, cobbled streets, you will notice one of its distinguishing features: the Regatus. These are small canals in the centre of the streets that carry riverwater right through the heart of the town.
Turning your attention to the houses, you will see that they have a uniform architectural style. It’s the popular architecture of the area, most noticeable in the underground space where the livestock was kept. They also have cellars as well as the above-ground upper floors. Make sure you take a photo because you don’t see houses like this just anywhere.
The streets names appear in two languages, Spanish and Fala, the latter a dialect that has been declared an Asset of Cultural Interest. It's an important part of the local culture, only spoken in three of the 20 villages in the Sierra de Gata.
Most of the streets will lead you to the Plaza Mayor, the main meeting point for the locals. If you are wondering where to eat, this is the place to be as there are several bars and restaurants where you can enjoy the local gastronomy.
In this square you can also find the Town Hall building, the fountain and the church tower, which dates back to the 16th century and houses the bells.
The church that the tower belongs to is the church of San Martín de Tours, located surprisingly far away. It is, however, one of the main attractions of the town. You can also visit the Convent of San Miguel and the different Palaces that are scattered throughout the town, of which we highlight the House of the Lords Santos Agero and that of the Figuerola family.
Finally, don't miss the chafaril, which are the old washing places, and the Roman road that runs through the village.
The most important fiestas in San Martín de Trevejo are those held in honour of San Martín de Tours, the patron saint, in November. During this event, a mass is held, followed by a procession and a party in the streets of the village.
If you would like to discover and experience all that this town has to offer, the first thing to do is to find out how to get there. It's very easy, simply get in the car and follow the signs.
Last but not least, we recommend that you spend a few days here by booking a holiday cottage in San Martín de Trevejo or staying in one of the hotels nearby, so that you can relax and enjoy your stay in the area.
