After the tour of Andalusia's White Villages, we will arrive in Benaocaz, in the province of Cádiz. It is a beautiful spot for a rural tourism vacation, located south of the Tavizna River and adjacent to the Endrinal Mountain Range.
What can we expect to find in the village? As you can see, it is a town that is deeply rooted in its religious traditions. The parish church of San Pedro, and the hermitages of San Blas and El Calvario, is its most prominent religious buildings.
These structures, on the other hand, are relatively modern in comparison to the medieval Nasrid area, which preserves the walls of ancient Muslim dwellings. From the same period, the ruins of the castle of Aznalmara, or Tavizna as it is known locally, still exist.
A visit to the Ecomuseo histórico de Benaocaz, which acts as an ethnological museum with remains unearthed in ancient sites, is recommended for those interested in learning more about Benaocaz's history.
What's in the surrounding area? On the edge of the Cordillera Betica, Benaocaz is surrounded by mountains. The surroundings are natural, with plenty of native plants.
Except for the western half of the village, the municipality is part of the Sierra de Grazalema Natural Park. The Alcornocales Natural Park encompasses this area. As you can see, it's a town that shines out among the surrounding greenery.
Some of the official hiking paths in the area around the settlement, such as the Roman road and the Salto del Cabrero, are not very difficult.
Where will you be able to stay? This community has a lot of rural flats, but there are also a few hostels and inns if you don't mind sharing a room with other tourists.
Some of the local specialities, such as the refrito benaocaceo, a stewed soup, the potaje de tagarninas, and the sweet suspiros de merengue (meringue), are not to be shared.
Benaocaz has two patron saint festivities, one for San Esteban and one for San Blas.
They take place on the first Saturday of June and the third Saturday of February, respectively. Liturgies and processions are held all across town during these days.
Benaocaz, as you can see, has a diverse range of tourist attractions. Come spend your vacation in a rural setting and take advantage of all that this charming community has to offer.
