Located in the province of Cádiz - in the Sierra de Cádiz region - the municipality of Olvera is without doubt one of the jewels in the province's crown. It is the gateway to, and first stop on, the Route of the White Towns and its white houses, steep narrow streets and green olive groves are an inviting prospect for visitors.
Dig a little deeper and it becomes irresistible. The town won the status of Rural Tourism Capital in 2021, has an old quarter declared an Historic-Artistic Site, and is one of the best places in the area to see the legacy of the centuries of muslim rule in Andalucia.
In terms of people, there are almost 8,000 Olvereños, as its inhabitants are called, who enjoy an unparalleled historical, artistic and cultural heritage. They also make it possible for visitors to experience it through the wide range of tourist attractions and services on offer.
What to see in Olvera? The history of this municipality is visible throughout the town that stands today.
Starting at the top of the town, we come across the imposing castle. This 12th century fortification is almost perfectly preserved. Next to it is the old women's prison which is now the Museum of the Frontier and Castles, where you can learn more about the town's history.
The castle is undoubtedly the town's main attraction, not only for its story, but also for the impressive views it affords. It was built by the Islamic civilisation at an altitude of over 600 metres above sea level for defensive purposes, as was the wall.
In terms of religious heritage, the church of Nuestra Señora de la Encarnación is the best example. One of the town’s Sites of Cultural Interest, the neoclassical temple is located in the square.
A stroll through the streets takes you to the Barrio de la Villa, the oldest neighbourhood in the municipality. You’ll feel like a time traveller as you discover the muslim characteristics that have withstood the passing of the years.
There are many other places like these that you will also be able to enjoy. And it's easier to do so than you might think, as Olvera is easily accessible by road.
If you are thinking of visiting the area, the best time to do so is during the fiestas. There are some interesting celebrations in the calendar, such as the Royal Fair and the festivities of San Agustín, which are held at the end of August, and the Livestock Fair which takes place in the month of May.
One of the most important festivals is the Fiesta de Nuestra Señora de los Remedios, the patron saint of Olvera, during which you can enjoy the typical culture and gastronomy of this municipality.
You can also visit in summer although the temperatures are quite high, so we recommend renting a holiday cottage with a swimming pool to help alleviate the heat. Having said that, you’ll find a house to rent at any time of the year, and you can be sure of a great experience.
