Tarifa is the southernmost point of Europe and Spain and a perfect town for a rural vacation and a beach vacation. It is situated on the Gibraltar Strait which separates the Mediterranean Sea from the Atlantic Ocean.
What is there to see in Tarifa? This town has influences of Arab and Christian civilizations, and evidence of their coexistence can be found in its streets. Begin by passing through the Puerta de Jerez, which houses the picture of the Cristo de los Vientos (Christ of the Winds). This stone gate is one of the few intact medieval wall sections scattered throughout the town.
The fortress they protected was the Castle of Guzmán el Bueno, of Muslim origin, in front of which there is also a sculpture in honour of Sancho IV, symbols of the Reconquest.
The church of San Mateo, rebuilt on the site of an old mosque, and the Mirador de África, from which you can view the neighbouring continent completely, are two other interesting places that you will be able to see.
What can you observe in the surroundings? Tarifa is connected to Isla de las Palomas, a small islet with ruins of Phoenician culture and a massive lighthouse via a man-made road.
The ruins of Baelo Claudia, which contain the remnants of Roman Empire buildings, are only 20 kilometres away. Also, don't forget to check out the nearby beaches, such as Bolonia and Valdevaqueros.
Hiking and cycling are popular activities for sports fans, but water sports such as kitesurfing are also available in Tarifa.
In this municipality, the best place to stay is in a comfortable hotel room or a flat near the beach, where you may take advantage of the benefits of its location. In general, all of the streets in this area have a pleasant ambience.
And where are you going to eat? Tarifa is noted for its fresh fish, but did you know that due to being neighbours with Africa, there is a significant influence on the food. Several restaurants specialize in Moroccan cuisine.
Tarifa knows how to have a good time, as seen by its well-known Carnival and Royal Fair. The former takes place in February and March, while the latter takes place on September 1st.
A rural tourist vacation at the tip of Spain is a unique idea with many opportunities and activities to enjoy.
