Andalucía is a community with true gems turned municipalities like in the case of Cardeña, which is found in the province of Córdoba. It’s a town that forms part of the region of Los Pedroches, one of the oldest in the peninsula.
The municipality is made up of several different localities including: Venta del Charco, Cardeña and Azuel, where you’ll be able to find a ton of things to do and places to visit, beside the Morena Mountain range which is what decorates its landscape.
Furthermore, it has a population of more than 1,400 habitants which are more commonly referred to as Cardeñosos in Spanish and that get to experience the authentic joys of their patrimony on a daily basis.
What is there to see ? It is bult of lots of points of interest in the centre as well as the in the nearby towns and villages that make it the place it is today.
One of the main points in terms of religious monuments is the church of Nuestra Señora del Carmen, the patron saint of the locality. It’s a modern temple that was built on top of another that was previously there from the 19th century.
In the centre you can visit the city council building. Thanks to its clear skies, the famous spot for space lovers is a very important construction in the area as well as the nature that you can learn a bit more about in the Visitor centre in Venta Nueva where you’ll find expositions and information about the vegetation and fauna of the region.
The Parque Natural Sierra de Cardeña y Montoro is another lure for nature lovers. It’s an authentic natural paradise that is also the natural habitat for a lot of species and that has been a protected area since 1989. It’s one of the best photos you’ll be able to get of the surroundings of this municipality.
In terms of the structure of the municipality, we find ourselves at a small village called El Cerezo that, nowadays, has a school for the few families that live there. It’s a place that is used during seasonal migration where the main activity is stockbreeding.
The district of Azuel also has a lot of things on offer for tourists. It’s more than worth taking a wander about the place as it’s one of the oldest areas and, in fact, the first traces of life that have been found in the district date back to Neolithic times thanks to the discovery of part of a vessel, the Necropolis and other possessions.
Venta del Charco is another one of the towns that belongs to the municipality and it’s worth taking a walk through its nature provided by its natural park and where you’ll find some hiking routes.
What about their festivities? The most important celebrations to note are the ones for San Antonio de Padua, who is the patron saint and is celebrated in the month of June. In August a date to remember is the Fair of Cardeña, taking place on the third weekend that is full of a wide range of fun activities on offer.
Furthermore, this town is only a few hours away from Seville by car so we would encourage you to stay a few days to have the opportunity to get to know nearby towns.
