Within the province of Córdoba is the municipality of Pozoblanco that has a breathtaking landscape of Los Pedroches which is full of life and history for you to enjoy.
It is only a mere 80km from the capital and in 2023 celebrated its 100th year anniversary after being officially named in 1923 by Alfonso XIII, which was one of the most significant moments in the history of the town.
The population of the capital of the region is more than 17,000 and the residents are called “pozoalbenses” or “tarugos” which is more colloquial. These people are lucky enough to live somewhere that dates all the way back to the 15th century.
What is there for you to see? Every corner of the town has something new to teach you about its history which will allow you to get to know the true personality of the place and be surprised with the rich patrimony it holds.
If you want to take a walk through the historical centre, we would highly recommend you start at the church of Santa Catalina, which is the most important place in terms of culture in the municipality. You can find it in the square where you can also go see the hermitage of Jesús Nazareno.
The Plaza de Toros (Square of the Bulls) is without a doubt one of the biggest tourist lures and is one of the most important squares, especially in September when the biggest event is celebrated where the most significant figures in bullfighting get together. If you’re interested in getting to know a little more about the history of bullfighting in Pozoblanco, you should head over to the museum.
If you keep on walking, you’ll find the Teatro El Silo (El Silo Theatre) that opened its doors in the year 2006 and has the capacity to hold up to 800 people.
The map of this municipality is full of places where you can try the rich gastronomy. So, where should you eat? In the centre there are several restaurants where you can try traditional and typical dishes like flamenquines (a battered dish made with ham, chicken and cheese) or salmorejo (a tomato soup). Or if you’ve got more of a sweet tooth, the hornazo virgen de Luna, a bread roll with cholcoate that is usually eaten during the pilgrimages.
Speaking of pilgrimages, the festivities are without a doubt the biggest event of the year in the town, the pilgrimage of the Virgen de Luna is one of the most important ones as it is held in honour of their patron saint. Semana Santa (Spain’s easter week) and the Carnaval are also two experiences worth living.
However, there’s one specific calendar date you cannot miss out on and it’s the fair of Nuestra Señora de las Mercedes. When does the fair take place? It takes place in the month of September and is one of the most important ones in the region and in the province.
The town is well worth the visit alongside the stunning surroundings you’ll be sure to get the best photos of. If you want a peaceful, stress-free trip, we would highly recommend you stay a few days.
Accommodation options are endless, but we must highlight the traditional Spanish holiday cottages in Pozoblanco that you’ll find spread throughout the valley of Los Pedroches as well as in other towns near Córdoba like Pozo Alcón.
