Within Castilla La Mancha, more specifically, in the province of Cuenca there is a municipality that’s not very well known but is full of charm: Huete. It is without a doubt one of the best destinations to enjoy some tourism, its history and patrimony combining modern day art with an old traditional style.
It can be found about 70km away from the capital and holds the title of being a city. A city that enjoys the views of some precious landscapes thanks to its location on the side of a mountain accompanied by views of the Cauda River and the stream from a channel in the Alcarria of Cuenca (a natural region in Spain known for its beauty that overlaps Guadalajara, Cuenca and Madrid).
All these characteristics make for the perfect ingredients for you to enjoy the history just like their 1,700 habitants that are registered in the census get to enjoy every day.
What is there to see? It’s one of the most charming towns, not only in Cuenca, but in the whole of Spain and it is home to a spectacular city centre where you’ll be able to get to learn in depth about the different points of interest.
Out of the list of places you don’t want to miss out on we must highlight the old town and where you’ll find the fortress that was built during the period of Arab domination that has since been remodelled. Another thing from the same time period would have to be the castle whose name translates to castle of the moon and is also known as the Alcazaba de Wadba that currently has hardly any walls left standing.
Following on with the civil architecture, in the centre the clock tower can be found which is from medieval times. If history is your thing, you can visit the museums, where you’ll want to learn about the traditions, art and works of the area.
In terms of the religious patrimony, there are lots of holy temples such as the school Jesuitas. It was an old convent alongside two main churches: Nuestra Señora de Atienza and Santo Domingo. There is one more church you can go see in honour of San Pedro, it is in ruins, but you can still see the remains of the original chapel.
The convent of Jesús María is another one of these works that is worth stopping off at as well as the monastery of Merced. Lastly there are two things that add the cherry on top of this list of points of interest in this city and they are non-other than the chapels of San Sebastián and San Gil.
What is there to see in the surroundings? This city is home to some very significant areas where they have found remains from other time periods.
One of the places you don’t want to miss out on which is one of the most spectacular places in the whole of Spain are the Minas de Lapis Specularis (the Lapis Specularis mines) from the Roman ages which are also known as the Cuevas del Sanabrio (caves of Sanabrio). If you want to go inside them, you can go inside two: los Cuchillos and Máximo Parrilla.
As you can see, this is the perfect destination to enjoy a few days at, where you will be sure to find the perfect accommodation to wind down in. Whether it’s a holiday cottage in Huete or a room or, in party season, a home with a party room to ensure you have the best time with your friends.
