Teror is a municipality that forms part of the island of Gran Canaria where you’ll be able to enjoy an authentic landscape full of charm and natural spaces which is what gives it the name of the “green heart” of the island.
If there’s anything this precious locality is famous for it’s the devotion is has to the Virgin del Pino, which is one of the cultural pillars of the area and what the daily life and tradition of the town and neighbouring towns revolve around. It is also commonly referred to as Villa Mariana de Teror.
The locality is home to 12,600 “terorenses” which is the name given to habitants of the area. Furthermore, the municipality can be divided between 11 parts which are as follows: El Álmo, Lo Blanco, Espartero, San Isidro, El Palmar, Arbejales, Miraflor, Las Rosadas, El Hornillo, San José del Álmo, San José del Álmo and the capital municipality which is Teror and is home so several different neighbourhoods.
What is there for you to see in Teror? Teror has a lot of things to do on offer from natural landscapes to impressive monuments that are worth stopping by to see.
You can’t start from somewhere that isn’t the Basilica of Nuestra Señora del Pino, which is the most characteristic point of the municipality and is catalogued as a national monument. The original foundation dates back to 1767 which is when the construction began, however, it has since been remodelled. You can’t skip out on seeing the inside where one of the most valuable gems can be found: the image of Nuestra Señora del Pino. The surrounding parts of the Basilica have been declared as a true collection of artistic history.
The famous market takes place beside the Basilica every Sunday Morning. They have lots of different things on offer, but it stands out for its sweet treats and handicrafts.
Take a walk down the streets and discover its essence, the charm of its streets adorned with buildings filled with wood balconies where you can admire the main square, which Is the most central and lively part of the locality.
Another few characteristic elements are the Episcopal Palace, which nowadays is a cultural centre, and the area of La Alameda, which are very close to one another. Lastly, don’t forget to visit the town council house, another one of the most representative points.
The square of Teresa de Boliva, the Argia fountain and the Monastery del Císter, which dates back to 1882 and is the Monk congregation house, are places you can’t miss out on.
What festivities are there in Teror? The main events for this locality are celebrated in September and in honour of Virgin del Pino who is the patron saint. But in the month of July the Fiesta de Agua takes place. During the festive periods concerts, charangas, a lot of culture and food are key parts.
