In the province of Granada we find the municipality of Monachil , located in the Vega de Granada region. Its spectacular landscapes, its culture and its fascinating old town combine to make it a perfect holiday destination.
It is the gateway to the Sierra Nevada Natural Park , just 8 kilometres from the city of Granada. This location means that you can enjoy a complete touristic experience in the town and also in the surrounding area.
As for the population, there are more than 8,000 people who live in the different neighbourhoods which make up the town. It’s an ideal place to base yourself for trips into the landscape of the natural park, including to the ski station.
What to see in Monachil? This is one of the most charming villages in the region. The town centre is over 800 metres above sea level, but the mountainous peaks that are visible from its streets reach heights of up to 3,000 metres.
You can discover the history of the town by following the old streets in the centre. One of the most illuminating sights is the Casa del Molino, the only remaining manor house in the municipality.
Continuing with the cultural highlights, we direct you to the church of the Encarnación, which is the most outstanding religious building in Monachil. In the centre of the town, in the Plaza Baja, we find the Town Hall building.
Finally, for a trip back in time, we recommend a visit to the Cerro de la Encina, an archaeological site where you can see prehistoric finds that date back as far as the year 1,333 BC.
What to do in Monachil? If there is one thing that stands out in this town, its nature. There's plenty to see and do in every corner of the natural park.
One of the most famous day trips is the Ruta de los Cahorros, a trail where you can enjoy the best views of the Sierra Nevada. The path is located next to the Monachil River and you will cross it five times on spectacular suspension bridges of different lengths. The longest is a crossing of 60 metres, not for the faint-hearted!
The circular route is just over 9 kilometres long. Allowing for time to stop and rest, as well as to gawp at the stunning scenery, it takes about 4 hours to walk it.
Another of the popular natural attractions of the area is the ski resort, where you will be able to enjoy your favourite snow sports in winter.
And if you're coming for the snow, we recommend staying for the fiestas which are held on 17 January in honour of San Antón, the patron saint of the town. This is your best chance to try the local delicacy, la Olla de San Antón.
There are also festivities in March in honour of San José which are an opportunity to get to know the traditional folklore of the sierra. All of these are good times to book a holiday cottage in Monachil and the surrounding area. Choose this area for a getaway in Granada that’s everything you dream of and more.
