Pampaneira is a municipality located in the province of Granada, in a charming setting at the foot of the Sierra Nevada and peak of Mulhacén. It is a spellbinding destination, perched on the Poqueira Ravine, which has been declared a Historic-Artistic Site.
It's one of the villages that form part of La Alpujarra Granadina region. The capital of the area is Órgiva and it has a total of 25 municipalities, among which Pampaneira, which we will talk about later, Bubión or Capileira are some of the most beautiful and well known.
Pampaneira is undoubtedly the most beautiful village in La Alpujarra, where you will enjoy a lot of interesting sights, a deep-rooted culture and vast landscapes to get lost in.
Do you know what Pampaneira means? The name comes from the Latin word pampinus, which means "branch" and refers to the lush vegetation that lines the banks of the river Poqueira.
There are many attractions in this municipality which allow you to enjoy history at every step. Although not very large, it has one of the most architecturally beautiful urban centres in the whole region.
What to see in Pampaneira? It doesn’t matter if you’re spending just a day here or if you’re staying for a longer period, there’s plenty on offer.
One of the places not to be missed is the Fountain of San Antonio. This fountain was the only one that existed in this town and where the inhabitants had to go to fetch water. Legend has it that its waters have magical properties - whoever drinks it, they say, will find love.
Right in the centre of the town is the church of Santa Cruz, which is located in the Plaza de la Libertad, the most central and lively square. It dates back to the 18th century and houses a collection of Mudejar art that is well worth a visit.
In the square where the church is located you can enjoy village life, architecture and beauty. The white façades, adorned with flowers on the balconies, and the different little shops are like something out of a fairytale. The shops sell the famous jarapas rugs of the region, alongside traditional chocolates which come in up to 40 varieties.
One of the best photos you will take of Pampaneira is of the narrow stone streets where channels carry running water through the village.
If you want to know how to get there, we recommend driving, as the last stretch runs along a winding road next to the ravine.
Once here, don't hesitate to enjoy a stay in the accommodation offering in Pampaneira. Spread throughout the whole village, you have the possibility of renting cheap holiday cottages, flats or charming hotel rooms.
In short, you will always have a perfect place to enjoy your experience in this municipality.
