In the province of Granada we find the town of Válor, the perfect destination to lose ourselves in the Alpujarra of Granada, as it is one of the municipalities that makes up the region.
Its landscapes are breathtaking, with many viewpoints where you can enjoy the scenery of the Sierra Nevada National Park and neighbouring municipalities such as Nevada, Ugíjar, Aldeire and Alpujarra de la Sierra. It has three main population centres: Mecina Alfahar, Nechite and the village of Válor, which is home to almost 700 inhabitants.
Once you arrive, you'll be wondering what to see in Válor. There is a great variety of things to see and do. For starters, there is nothing better than a stroll through the town centre.
Enjoy discovering the streets that were the birthplace of one of the most outstanding historical figures of the region, Abén Humeya, also known as Fernando de Córdoba y Válor, and discover the different charming corners of the town.
In terms of religious heritage, the parish church dates back to the 16th century. It has Mudejar architectural features and an interior with the image of the Santo Cristo de la Yecla (Holy Christ of the Yecla).
There are also two important hermitages in the municipality: Nuestra Señora de Lourdes and Varones Apostólicos.
In the centre of the village, granted Villa status by Alfonso XIII in 1902, you can stop at the important and well preserved fountain in the Plaza de la Iglesia de Mecina Alfahar.
El Castillejo takes you on a journey back in time. The remains of the castle wall screen the ruins of an ancient Islamic settlement. Also interesting is the Way of the Cross that you can see on the façades of the houses as you walk through the streets. They are original crosses from the period and made of wrought iron.
To get to know Válor, there is nothing like a short stay in one of the best holiday cottages in Granada. The properties on offer have different amenities such as private swimming pools or jacuzzis that are perfect for relaxing after a stroll through the streets. Each one has a special charm and all are blessed by their location in this area.
And if you want to get away from Válor and stay in another part of La Alpujarra, we recommend you go to nearby villages such as Cádiar, Yegen, Laujar, Valdeobispo or Trevélez, which is the highest village in Granada. All of them will allow you to enjoy the Alpujarras in depth.
To round off the experience, there's nothing better than a gastronomic route through this mountainous area, where you'll be able to sample dishes such as pickled partridge, local hams and typical sweets.
