Within the province of Huelva, we find ourselves with the municipality of Cortegana, which is a very charming destination located in one of the most spectacular spots in Andalucía alongside the Parque Natural de la Sierra de Aracena and the Picos de Aroche.
The municipality is located at almost 700 metres high and is about 120 kilometres from the capital. It has more then 4,600 habitants called Corteganeses that get to enjoy a spectacular scenery.
What is there for you to see? This enclave is ideal for lovers of history as well as well as those who enjoy nature.
In terms of the patrimony you can see, the map of this town is bursting with points of interest like in the case of the castle that dates back to the 18th century and that can be accessed by two entrances, where you’ll be able to enjoy the best views and elements with as much beauty as its Alcazar.
The Plaza de toros is another characteristic of the town but we also recommend you give the city council building a visit as well as the old laundrette from 1883.
Moving onto the cultural elements, we must highlight the Parish Church of Divino Salvador located in the square that has the same name and that holds some authentic artistic gems. There exists another church that is dedicated to San Sebastián from the 14th century as well as two main churches: Nuestra Señora de la Piedad from the 13th century and Calvario, which can be found just at the exit of the municipality.
It is believed that the name Cortegana means “communal land”. A land that is vast and that is used for its main economic drive: stockbreeding, which is how they produce one of their main products which is high quality meat, we recommend you try some as it’s very popular within and without the country.
What is there to do with children? One pf the best plans to do with the kids of the house is experience the celebrations within the municipality. The medieval fair is especially interesting. A spectacular few days when the whole town travels back to the past and is held at the castle.
It takes place in the month of August and lasts four days where different concerts, performances and activities take place.
If you’re interested in getting to know how to get here, the best way is to go by car, that way you’ll be able to venture through its surroundings.
One thing that’s for sure is no matter when you travel, you’ll find somewhere to stay that is perfect for you and your type of trip. From the options available we must highlight the cabins that are fairly priced and the cheap holiday cottages to rent in Cortegana, some even with a pool or the charming hotels to ensure you get the most out of your holiday.
