The Andalusian municipality of Higuera de la Sierra can be found within the province of Huelva and is accompanied by an impressive natural landscape that makes way to the Mountainous Natural Park of Aracena and the Picos de Aroche.
It is without a doubt one of the most interesting destinations to visit and especially if you’re taking the kids as it’s famous for having the second oldest parade of the three kings in the whole of Spain. Furthermore, its city centre counts on an impressive collection of points of interest that are worth getting to know.
In terms of the population, it has more than 1,300 habitants or “higuereños” which is what they are typically referred to in Spanish and that get to enjoy a place filled with history.
Do you already know anything about the history of Higuera de la Sierra? This territory in the era of the Christian Conquest in 1246 united with Aracena and Zufre. It didn’t always have the same name and was previously known as “Higuera de Aracena” and got its star moment when it was awarded the title of being a town in 1553 thanks to Carlos V.
What is there to see? In present time, there are a lot of stops to be made when exploring and it’s all thanks to the beauty and importance of its monuments, it has also been classified as a Collection of Artistic History which in Spain is a legal declaration.
Within this collection there are also other elements that are included like the religious patrimony such as the church of San Sebastián, the most important temple in the locality that dates back to the 18th century and that inside holds a precious image of the patron saint of the town, who is Virgen del Prado.
On a nice walk through the pleasant streets of this white town you’ll come across other points of interest like the chapels of San Antonio and Cristo del Rosario.
But there is also civil patrimony present, one of the most characteristic places being the Plaza de Toros, a spectacular sight, alongside the town council building that serve as good examples of architecture of this corner of Andalusia.
When do the celebrations take place? If there exists a perfect time of year to get to know this town, it’s during the festive period. It has quite a few important dates for the people who live here like the famous Parade of the Three Kings like, as we have previously mentioned, is one of the most emblematic in the whole country.
The Feria del Cristo (fair of christ) in barrio alto, and Velá de San Antonio, in barrio bajo are two important events. One of the most typical Spanish drinks: sangría has a big part to play in the last one mentioned. But if you want to live the true passion of its habitants and enjoy the spark, colour and joy of the people, there’s no better way than the Romería de Prado, which is a pilgrimage held in honour of their patron saint.
In order to live all of their festivities from start to finish, there’s nothing like keeping your options open and considering the possibility of renting long term. However, even if you only have a few days, the options are endless. You’ll have a lot of holiday cottaages to rent in Higuera de la Sierra as well as in neighbouring places like Las Tobas. However, there are also hotels, rural apartments and charming cottages which will allow you to relax and enjoy the most out of your holiday.
