We welcome you to a unique region located in Andalusia that covers the provinces of Granada and Almeria and where you will be able to enjoy one of the most representative pictures of the area, with nature and culture in each of the corners that form it. We open the doors of the Alpujarra!
This is one of the most important cultural and natural areas in Spain. An area that has remained almost untouched since the time of Arab rule and where even today you can still clearly see the unique Berber architecture. This is why it is at the top of the list of favourite destinations for tourists in Andalusia.
Permanently overlooking the mountains of Sierra Nevada, the Alpujarra welcomes you to a landscape where valleys and ravines are a constant feature, and where the villages that make up the Alpujarra are a true marvel to behold. It is not surprising, therefore, that many of the towns and villages belonging to this region have made it to the list of Most Beautiful Villages of Spain.
Winding, narrow, whitewashed streets with canals and irrigation channels, houses with cylindrical chimneys on their roofs and an almost stacked layout of houses on the hillsides will be a constant feature of your tour of the villages of the Alpujarra.
Do you want to know which are the most charming villages of the Alpujarra?
The list is endless, as is the beauty of each one of them. Therefore, before travelling to the Alpujarra you should make a selection of the ones you don’t want to miss.
We are only going to give you a glimpse of the most characteristic ones, starting with the mysterious Soportújar, whose tourism is closely linked to magic and witchcraft. Yes, you heard right. We are talking about real witchcraft here.
After the expulsion of the Arabs, the Galicians settled in Soportújar and with them, their culture linked to the meigas. To visit this village is to enjoy the mysteries that you can still find in every corner.
Your next stop can be a three in one: the Conjunto Histórico Artístico del Barranco de Poqueira which brings together the villages of Pampaneira, Bubión and Capileira, considered to be among the most beautiful ones in the Alpujarra.
All three are within walking distance of each other, and have breathtaking views of the Barranco de Poqueira canyon, preserving perfectly in their houses the terraos and tinaos which are two of the characteristic forms of construction of the architecture in Alpujarra.
Another visit not to be missed is that of the village of Trévelez. It is not just any village, it is the highest village in Spain, next to the Mulhacén mountain. The views are not suitable for those with vertigo.
All these villages are part of the Alpujarra Alta, but it is also divided into Alpujarra Media and Baja.
And after this extensive route, you have to fill your stomach to keep your strength up, and what better way to do it than to discover the gastronomy of the Alpujarra?
Here you will find stews and hearty spoon dishes such as Olla de San Marcos pot or Puchero de Hinojos stew, especially when the cold weather sets in, but when the sun starts to warm up, there is nothing better than a gazpacho or ajoblanco (a bread, almond and garlic soup served cold).
