We welcome you to one of the most outstanding corners of La Rioja, where you will discover the true essence of this land of wines where you can savour its exquisite taste with Designation of Origin and, at the same time relax during your visit choosing from the wide range of rural tourism on offer.
We are talking about Haro, a city that takes its name from the region of which it forms part off, located in the area of La Rioja Alta, bordered to the north by Burgos, with the Obarenes Mountains as its natural border, and whose historical importance has been very relevant over time, with much of its legacy still in force today.
Would you like to discover all its heritage and history? Strolling through its streets you can walk through the old quarter, which is a Historic-Artistic Site, due to the preservation of ancient palaces and churches, most of which date back to medieval times, and which will transport you through that period.
The most popular meeting place is the Plaza de la Paz, where we find its most emblematic building, in neoclassical style, and current seat of the town hall, while in the Barrio de La Herradura you can enjoy the typical tapas in the swarm of pedestrian streets that make it up and which are full of taverns where you will be served products of its most typical gastronomy washed down with its wines.
Did you know that Haro is the Capital of Rioja? The Barrio de Estación is where many of the different wineries in the town are concentrated, since the main economic engine of the region is, as you might have guessed, wine production, and as a result of this, wine tourism offers a wide range of wine tastings and guided tours of the vineyards.
Haro's history with wine culture goes back many centuries, and the fact is that these lands have special characteristics marked both by their climate and by the waters of the river Ebro, which make them highly fertile. This fact, together with the arrival of the railway at the time, formed the perfect combination to build and raise these wines, with their own denomination, to their current fame and quality.
And how about joining a party? The Wine Battle, of National Tourist Interest, is held on the 29th of June at the Riscos de Bilibio, next to the San Felices Hermitage. Every year, both locals and visitors come to this event in which, in a mixture of devotion and celebration, all these are baptised with wine soaks.
Another of its strong points is nature. Around Haro we can find incredible landscapes, in which, of course, the extensive vineyards stand out, with an intense red colour in autumn, and which are the perfect setting for hiking, enjoying a horse-riding route or any kind of active tourism.
Not sure where to stay during your visit? Haro offers a wide range of establishments, especially rural accommodation, such as flats, hotels and country houses to suit all tastes. In addition, some of them even offer the possibility of visiting one of the wineries, ending the experience with a delicious tasting of the finest wines.
