Located on the south of the island of Lanzarote is the municipality of Yaiza, one of the most charming towns on the island where you can enjoy nature, a wide range of tourism attractions and cultural activities.
These are the key draws that bring visitors to the town. And there’s no off-season, because good weather prevails almost 365 days of the year.
It's part of the province of Las Palmas in the Canary Islands, one of those picture-postcard towns in the archipelago where you won't be able to stop taking photos. There are some unique beauty spots in the town and the surrounding area that are well worth discovering.
Before you dive into the town, how about knowing a bit of its history? To understand a little about the traditions of the area, it is always good to go back in time. In this case, Yaiza was the first place to be conquered and the first European settlement in the Canary Islands.
Historically, it was a place whose main source of income was agriculture, especially the cultivation of cereals and pulses, but nowadays its main economic engine is tourism.
It is without doubt a good holiday destination, a well kept and beautiful place that has received several awards recognising its beauty and the care of its surroundings.
What to see in Yaiza? The first thing to note is that it is one of two municipalities within the Timanfaya National Park, making it one of the essential destinations in the area. Some routes, such as the Route of the Volcanoes, and guided tours let you get up close and personal with the volcanic landscapes of the Montañas de Fuego or the Islote de Hilario.
In the town centre we find tradition in the architecture, where the white of the houses is combined with the dark brown and grey of the sand of its beaches. Making it all stand out are colourful flowers that decorate the balconies.
A stroll through its clean and pretty streets will take you to places such as the Casa de la Cultura de Benito Pérez Armas, or the important church of Nuestra Señora de los Remedios, the patron saint of the town. Her feast day, the 8th of September, is one of the most important dates in the town’s calendar.
In addition to Timanfaya, Yaiza offers other natural areas of great interest such as the beaches of Papagayo or Playa Blanca and the many coves. There is also the curious Charco de los Clicos, a place where the water is an intense green colour, and various salt plains, such as Janubio or La Geria.
In addition, we recommend that you sample the unique gastronomy of the town in one of the restaurants, washed down with local wine - whose production might surprise you.
And to experience Yaiza on your own time, there’s a wide variety of holiday cottages throughout the municipality, as well as hotels, where you can enjoy your stay.
