In the region of La Noguera we find the municipality of Àger, which is part of the province of Lleida. Its location in the Àger Valley between two rivers, the Noguera Pallaresa and the Noguera Ribagorzana, makes it a favourite destination for lovers of adventure sports.
Àger has a great story behind it that has developed over the centuries in the protection of the mountains of Montroig and Montsec d'Ares.
Despite being a dry area, it’s blessed with fertile soil and it’s probably this characteristic that’s given the area its name. Ager means agricultural, while saltus, another term associated with the municipality, means natural virgin land.
Walking through the town centre we find a large number of sights worth seeing, many of which are well known tourist destinations while others are less famous.
What to see in Àger?
If we start with the religious buildings, we’ll find the Collegiate Church of San Pedro, dating from the eleventh century, in the centre. Alongside the castle, it forms one of the most important examples of Romanesque architecture in the area. Both the church and the castle are located in the highest part of the village, offering impressive views of the surrounding landscape.
The church of San Vicente is another religious building located in the village centre. Inside, you can see ancient frescoes dating from the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries as well as characteristics of different architectural styles. Another important temple is the Calvary Chapel, also located in an elevated area and acting as an impressive viewpoint over the rest of the town.
On top of that, the village has a number of hermitages and watchtowers from different periods of its history.
The Villa Wall is a fortified complex that surrounds the historic centre of the village, extending for 800 metres and strengthened with towers.
Traces of the past are always visible to those who know where to look. From the time of Roman rule we find two kilometres of perfectly preserved Roman road running from the port to the bridge of En Rossell, which is located just at the entrance of the village.
What to do in the Àger Valley? The whole region is surrounded by a landscape that invites you to get stuck in. Active tourism is a great source of income in this area and you can have a go at different adventure sports in the nearby landscapes of the Congost de Mont-rebei and the Sierra del Montsec.
If you want to know how to get there, we recommend that you come by car so that you’ll be able to visit beautiful villages nearby such as Agulló or Vilamajor.
Finally, to make it a perfect trip, there’s nothing like staying in a holiday cottage in Àger. There are campsites and hotels available too, but having a house to yourself is our recommendation.
