Considered one of the most beautiful spots in the Community of Madrid and set in the landscape of the Sierra Norte, we find the municipality of Buitrago del Lozoya, an ideal destination for enjoying rural tourism.
Less than an hour's drive away from the hustle and bustle of the Spanish capital, we find a haven of peace with a mediaeval ambience. The town of 2,000 people spans the River Lozoya and has held the status of a Historic-Artistic Site and an Asset of Cultural Interest since 1993.
What to see in Buitrago del Lozoya? The range of sights to see is spectacular and extensive, starting with the perfectly preserved and beautiful town wall that earned it the status of National Monument in 1931.
Walking along an 800-metre stretch of the wall, divided into the low and high parapet, is the best way to kick off a sightseeing tour that takes in the history and heritage of the town.
The Alcázar, or fortress, is another attraction. Here, you can discover a unique mix of Gothic and Mudejar styles in the parade ground and the defensive towers.
The Casa del Bosque (forest house) is one of the most beautiful buildings in the zone. It was built in the 17th century for the Dukes of Infantado and, although it is now in ruins, is an idyllic sight located on an estate about 2 kilometres from the centre of the town.
The Old Bridge over the Lozoya River and the New Bridge create a spectacular panoramic view that makes for fantastic photographs.
In terms of religious heritage, the church of Santa María del Castillo stands out, as does the Picasso Museum. This is a collection of over 60 works that the artist donated to the town and it’s free to visit. You can visit all these places alone or on an organised free tour, where a knowledgeable guide will talk you through the interesting stories associated with each place.
In addition, we recommend enjoying the different bars and restaurants in the Plaza de la Constitución and the busy Calle Real, where you can go for tapas and try the delights of the local gastronomy.
The fiestas of Buitrago del Lozoya are held at two different times of year: one in September, in honour of the Santísimo Cristo de los Esclavos and the Virgen de la Soledad, and the other in summer. These are the fiestas of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción and San Roque, a perfect time to visit the town and to swim in Lake Riosequillo. This artificial reservoir is one of the largest in the area and is set up with a rest area and services, making it the perfect place to swim in the area of Madrid - especially if you are travelling with children.
If you've already got the urge to go and want to know how to get there, you have the option of getting there by private car or by public transport from the city centre. With the first option, you can also visit nearby villages such as Braojos de la Sierra, Mangirón and Horcajo de la Sierra, among many others.
And if you plan to stay for a few days, there is a wide variety of accommodation in the area. Charming rural hotels, airbnb-type flats, holiday cottages and country houses with swimming pools or jacuzzis are available in Buitrago del Lozoya and also in other areas of the Sierra de Madrid. Being so close to the capital, these are excellent places for enjoying a getaway.
