Miraflores de la Sierra can be found in the Community of Madrid and is comprised of some of the most picturesque landscapes like the Sierra de Guadarrama National Park and the Cuenca Alta del Manzanares National Park. The town is home to more than 6,700 habitants that get to enjoy the peaceful atmosphere and an amazing quality of life. The two names given to describe the people who are from here in Spanish are “mirafloreño” and “macureño”. Fun fact, the locality had a different name in the past, it was called Porquerizas.
What is there for you to see in Miraflores de la Sierra? Talking about this town is like talking about a perfect mix of nature and heritage that have come together to create somewhere that’s 100% worth getting lost in.
The locality is known for its famous fountains, and by taking a journey through its stunning and tranquil streets you’ll come across some of them, like the fountain of los Borricos, that since its construction in the 1800’s served as a drinking trough. Another one you’ll come across is the Fountain del Pino, that dates back even further to 1791 and whose water comes from a natural spring. Lastly, we recommend you go see the Nueva Fountain which is one of the most emblematic ones.
If you wander deep into the streets, you’ll be able to admire the summer houses from the high second-class citizens of the 19th century when lots of villas were built that in today’s day and age form part of the landscape that lots of visitors take advantage to take photos of.
Located in the heart of Miraflores de la Sierra, you’ll find the Plaza de España (the square) where the Town Council building and Clock Tower can be found.
But its attractions don’t end there as it’s home to a vast collection of religious heritage that you’ll get to see. The chapel of Padre Rivero is the starting point for the religious festivities with a pilgrimage in honour of San Blas, whose image can be seen inside the chapel.
One of the most spectacular and beautiful places in the locality is the Cave of Nuestra Señora de Begoña, it was founded in 1952 and has been used for mass since 2002. It’s a place where religion and nature come together to create somewhere that is definitely worth a visit.
Another few places you need to visit is the San Blas Shrine and the Parish Church, which is the oldest in the whole municipality.
When do the festivities take place? There are four key calendar dates to have in mind. The festivities for San Blas and La Rosca, are celebrated the 2nd and 3rd of February, and the festivities for San Isidro and Virgen de la Asunción on the 15th of May and August.
Any time of year would be a good time to visit, but the question is what’s the best way to get there? It’s only 49km in car from Madrid but you can also take public transport.
