Right between the provinces of Castellón and Teruel we find a region where you will be able to travel back in time. A place where its landscapes and medieval buildings will make you enjoy the most present-day history.
The Maestrazgo region is undoubtedly a destination worth visiting and where you will find the perfect contrast between rugged landscapes, sometimes difficult to access, and villages where history is very present. The region is made up of 16 municipalities, and each one of them offers the traveller a unique rural tourism experience.
There are plenty of reasons to visit Maestrazgo, and the communion between nature, cultural tourism and gastronomy, wrapped in a calmness that doesn’t go amiss, are just some of the characteristics of this region.
If you are thinking of travelling to the eastern part of the province of Teruel, this is your chance to discover its magic. Do you want to know what you can't miss?
First of all, we travel to the Maestrazgo Cultural Park, which was created in 2005 and has an indisputable protagonist: the Guadalope river. This river runs through some of Aragon's Natural Monuments. To give you an idea of the valuable nature of this place, of the six Natural Monuments in Aragon, four belong to the Maestrazgo region.
Las Grutas de Cristal de Molinos in Teruel is one of them. It is a group of caves made up of rather curious geological formations that can be visited through different galleries and rooms.
Another of the wonders of the Maestrazgo is the Fonseca Bridge, built naturally by the river that flows under it, and which is also the natural habitat of animals such as the vulture, the golden eagle, the mountain goat and the wild boar. Although, without a doubt, what you will certainly spot at first glance in the area are the Órganos de Montoro, is an impressive rocky area of more than 200 metres in altitude whose whimsical shapes make it a tourist attraction.
Finally, and finishing our tour of the area's natural spaces, we would like to highlight the Nacimiento del Pitarque, a river that offers one of the best views you can imagine. You can get to know it as there is a route that passes right next to it, which will leave you open-mouthed.
And with all this, it is not strange to imagine that man has been attracted to the Maestrazgo area since prehistoric times. That is why different sets of cave paintings have been found in the area around the villages of Castellote and Mosqueruela, which have also been recognised as World Heritage Sites.
But over the years, Maestrazgo has developed in the different villages that make up the region its own artistic current of Levantine Gothic, with some touches of Renaissance and Baroque style as well in its heritage.
Among its most charming municipalities and, in fact, included in the list of Beautiful Villages of Spain, we find Mirambel, with its impressive walls, and Cantavieja, where you can discover the church of the Assumption. In both villages, their medieval castles are undoubtedly an attraction.
But there is not only heritage in Teruel, as Castellón also has an impressive heritage that forms part of the Maestrazgo region, located in the villages of Ares del Maestre, one of the most picturesque ones here, and Morella, where you can visit the church of Santa María la Mayor and its walled complex with its outstanding castle.
As you can see, Maestrazgo has a lot to offer for tourists.
