Frigiliana is one of those villages that needs no introduction. Its charming cobbled streets and decorated facades make it one of the most beautiful villages in Spain. In fact, due to its striking appearance, they say that you not only travel in time, but also in space when you come here, because it seems as if you are in the tourist paradise of Mykonos.
It’s one of the White Villages of Andalucia, located in the protected region of Axarquia in the province of Málaga.
Visiting this small village can be done in a day, although we recommend that you make every step count, because the beauty and surprises that await you will leave you open-mouthed.
In winter it has a population of more than 3,000 inhabitants, although in the summer season this number grows considerably as it is one of the most beautiful destinations in Malaga.
Getting there
Due to its location, this beautiful village can easily be reached by car in less than an hour from Malaga city. If you are travelling from other cities such as Granada, the journey takes a little over an hour.
The surrounding area is an enclave for those seeking culture and tranquillity, as it has preserved its traditional essence while remaining free from the large crowds of southern Spain’s beach resorts. Having said that, it is very close to the sea. Not far to the south is the village of Nerja, where you can enjoy the beach and stay overnight in a local holiday cottage.
Frigiliana is famous for being the town of the three cultures, as Christians, Jews and Muslims lived here at one time and have left their mark in different parts of the town in the years since the 15th century. One of the most significant sites is the Plaza de las Tres Culturas, which has spectacular views of the Mediterranean.
What to see in this White Town?
There are many points of interest in the tangle of Frigiliana’s streets, and the best way to get to know them is by walking through them. We can assure you that you won't be able to put your camera down.
The Moorish quarter or Barribarto has one of the most beautiful streets in the town: the Calle de la Amargura. But it’s not the only one, as the Calle Alta, Zalacatún and El Garral are romantic postcard images that show the charm of traditional Andalucia.
The plaza is the nerve centre of the town, where you will find the Town Hall and the church of San Antonio de Padua, as well as several bars and restaurants where you can enjoy an aperitif against the stunning backdrop. Who could resist that?
The Archaeological Museum and the Sugar Cane Honey Factory are other places that are also worth visiting.
We encourage you to discover Frigiliana for yourself, by staying in one of the best holiday homes in Malaga. Your choice of accommodation will allow you to relax in style, whether you choose a modern flat, a rustic hotel or even a holiday home with a heated swimming pool!
Finally, the best time to visit Frigiliana is during its Three Cultures Festival, a celebration held in August that represents each of the cultures that once lived together in the area.
