Nerja is one of the most popular destinations in the province of Malaga, located in the heart of the Costa del Sol. Its deep-rooted Andalucian character permeates every corner of the town, from the highest part to its magnificent beaches.
It is also one of the most beautiful towns in southern Spain. The old town centre, characterised by the white facades of buildings with balconies that overlook the Mediterranean, is the most characteristic feature of this coastal town.
If Nerja is known for anything, it is for the famous series Verano Azul, which put the town on the map. There are numerous attractions in the town centre that are related to the series, such as the Verano Azul Park, where you will find the famous boat of Chanquete: the Dorada.
What not to miss in Nerja
There are plenty of must-see places in this village, where narrow, steep streets conserve a 15th-century town plan. There are many points from which, sometimes unexpectedly, you catch sight of the sea. In fact, we recommend a visit to what is known as the Balcón de Europa, a viewpoint where you can enjoy views that stretch from the crystal clear waters below to the horizon.
In the centre of this town, which forms part of the Axarquia region, there are other points of interest, such as the Town Hall building and the nearby church of El Salvador.
One of the most popular destinations for tourists is the Cave of Nerja, a Historic Artistic Monument which receives so many visitors that it is one of the most well known natural monuments in our country.
This is an underground cavern with stalactites and stalagmites erupting from the rocky floor and ceiling. It can be visited any day of the year except 1 January and 15 May and it has a cost per person for an adult.
Although the caves are a marvel to visit at any time of year, Nerja is most famous as a destination for lovers of the sun and the beach. Having said that, with over 320 days of sunshine per year, any time of year is a good time to visit Nerja.
To make the most of its climate, you’ve got to go to the beaches. The most famous one is Burriana beach, which was the setting for the TV series Verano Azul. It is an 800-metre expanse of sand where you can relax, play and swim to your heart’s content, without forgetting to sample the gastronomy in one of the seafront restaurants.
Calahonda Beach is located under the famous Balcón de Europa that we mention above, and its crystal clear water makes it one of the most visited beaches in the area.
If you want to spend the whole day in the water, Nerja boasts plenty of holiday cottages with swimming pools that you will love. In addition, in the surrounding villages of Maro or Frigiliana, you can find holiday homes within walking distance of the town centre and the beaches of Nerja. Andalusia has the perfect holiday accommodation for you!
