Welcome to the south of Salamanca! We open the doors to Candelario, a town full of personality where you will learn two new words: “regaderas” (watering cans) and “batipuertas” (a type of wooden fence).
This town is located in the middle of the Sierra de Béjar mountain range and is part of the so-called Silver Way or Ruta de la Plata route. Visiting Candelario will discover to you the authenticity and tradition of the province of Salamanca. Did you know that Candelario is part of the Spanish association The Most Beautiful Villages of Spain?
Having been declared Historic-Artistic Site, this municipality shows off its beauty and autochthonous architecture, which will make it possible for you to enjoy a day of rural tourism.
Taking a stroll in the urban area you will come across two singular and key elements of this municipality. On the one hand, you will also learn about the so-called “regaderas”, that were small watering cans located at the ends of the streets. Their function was to transport water from the highest part of the town to the lowest one. This system also allowed to irrigate lands.
On the other hand, if we observe fronts and houses, we will notice the renowned “batipuertas”, which are a type of wooden gate originally used to protect houses and animals' doors from the snow.
Some of the most singular religious structures of Candelario are the church Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de la Asunción, that combines distinct architectural styles, and the chapel of Ermita del Cristo del Refugio, also referred to as Ermita del Humilladero, where the remains of an ancient church of Béjar are located.
Fountains are another recurring element in the street decoration of Candelario. The three most important ones are Fuente de las Ánimas, Fuente de los Puentes and Fuente de Lapachares, each of the fountains located in an ancient exit of the village.
The narrow, steep and cobblestone streets of Candelario are the venue of one of its most traditional and peculiar festivities: the wedding feast “Boda Típica”, where inhabitants reproduce ancient wedding celebrations, wearing their traditional costumes and performing the authentic dances of the town.
Incidentally, it must be mentioned that Candelario has been the setting of preference for various Spanish film and series shootings, such as “The Little Nightingale”, a Spanish musical film starring a child singer nicknamed “Joselito”.
Do not leave without trying the traditional dishes of Candelario to complete your experience. Delight yourself with its traditional cold cuts (embutidos), which are elaborated from the traditional pig slaughter held every year.
Enjoy Candelario!
