Within the region of the Sierra de Francia in the province of Salamanca is the municipality of Miranda del Castañar, one of the most impressive and traditional places in the area to enjoy well preserved architecture, interesting heritage and a couple of days away from it all.
The village has a population of almost 400 inhabitants who live in the mediaeval houses. There are numerous points of interest in the centre and natural beauty in the surrounding area that make this a perfect setting to start your escape to the country.
What to see in Miranda del Castañar? The village has a rich heritage that we encourage you to explore.
First of all, we recommend that you visit the more than 600 metres of wall that are still standing from the mediaeval period. The surviving section conserves four gateways that lead to the walled centre.
Once inside the walls, you are greeted by the Castle of Miranda del Castañar, the undisputed star attraction of the village. Dating from the 14th and 15th centuries, it is one of the best preserved fortresses in the whole province. Although it's not possible to visit the interior, as it’s private property, visiting the castle is very worthwhile as the views from its prominent position are hard to beat.
Moving on, we come across the square which also serves as the bullring. It dates back to the 16th century, making it one of the oldest in the whole of Spain. Next to the square is the Cárcel Real (Royal Prison) and very close by are the Alhóndiga (old grain exchange) and the parish church in honour of Santiago and San Ginés de Arlés. The 17th century Torre de las Campanas (Tower of the Bells) stands apart from the church.
There are other important religious buildings such as the hermitages of Cristo del Humilladero and the patron saint the Virgen de la Cuesta, which are located outside the walls.
A trip to Miranda del Castañar means being able to enjoy rural tourism in all its guises, including the gastronomic side. You can eat the best traditional dishes in any of its restaurants all year round or wait for the festive season.
When are the fiestas? The festivities in honour of the patron saint are held in September. They are Fiestas of Regional Tourist Interest and different events are held, the most important being the procession of the candles.
What to see nearby? The village is surrounded by very pleasant natural spaces, particularly along the River Francia which flows through Miranda del Castañar. You can also go on several circular hikes, such as the Camino de los Prodigios, which is an 11-kilometre circuit through the landscape that takes in some interesting artworks along the way.
It is very easy to get here, especially by car. If you drive, you will be able to visit the beautiful villages nearby and to get to know this part of the Sierra de Francia a little better.
If you decide to stay for a few days, we recommend that you relax in one of the many accommodation options available in the municipality, which include holiday cottages for rent and even a hotel with a spa where you will have a very special experience.
